Plant spacing calculator

Estimate a practical plant count from a rectangular growing area and a spacing guideline.

Use the result as a starting point.

Enter measured values, check the units, and keep the assumptions beside the answer. This tool supports a growing decision; it does not replace a calibrated meter, a product label, or observation of the crop.

Interpretation: This is a layout estimate, not a yield guarantee. Canopy size and airflow change practical spacing.

How to use this tool

Use this grid estimate to plan plant sites before drilling holes or arranging containers. Spacing is a crop and airflow decision, not a yield promise.

  1. Enter growing-area length and width plus the target center-to-center spacing, all in inches.
  2. Enter the values, check the units, and select Calculate.
  3. Read the result as a planning estimate, then compare it with the crop and system.

Formula or reference method

Plant count = floor(length / spacing) x floor(width / spacing).

Worked example

A 36 x 24 inch area at 8 inch spacing gives floor(36/8) x floor(24/8) = 4 x 3, or about 12 plants.

Understanding the result

The grid shows how many complete spacing intervals fit in each direction; edge clearance is not included.

Assumptions and limits

Plant size, cultivar, light uniformity, access, airflow, and support can require wider spacing.

Common mistakes

Do not divide total area by spacing once. A rectangular grid must be calculated independently in both directions.
