PPFD and DLI describe related but different parts of the light environment. Mixing them up leads to misleading comparisons between fixtures and schedules.
PPFD is a moment
Photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) measures photons arriving each second at a location, in micromoles per square meter per second. It changes across the canopy and when you dim or move the fixture. One reading at the center of a shelf does not prove that the whole canopy receives the same light.
DLI is the day
Daily light integral (DLI) sums the light received over the photoperiod and is expressed in moles per square meter per day. The same PPFD can produce different DLI values at 12 hours and 18 hours because the schedule changes the total dose.
The common estimate is DLI = PPFD x hours x 0.0036. The factor converts micromoles per square meter per second into moles per square meter per day. It is an estimate for the measured location, not a guarantee that every leaf receives that dose.
For the next step, see the grow-light wattage guide.
Use both together
Use PPFD to check canopy coverage and DLI to check the schedule. Then compare the result with plant posture, temperature, water use, and crop stage. If plants stretch, look at useful light and distance; if they show stress under stronger light, check heat, water supply, airflow, and root conditions before simply reducing nutrients.
Wattage is a power draw, not a PPFD map. A fixture can use more electricity without distributing light evenly, and a dimmer fixture can perform well over a smaller canopy. Use the DLI calculator for a quick estimate and the grow-light guide for placement and coverage decisions.
A practical measurement routine
- Measure at the canopy height, not only at the fixture.
- Check several positions across the growing area.
- Record the photoperiod and whether the fixture is dimmed.
- Recheck after plants grow closer to the light or the shelf changes.
